Mahmud was born in 1967 in Nairobi into an Isma’ili Muslim Family. In Fact, his family originated from India. They immigrated to East Africa from Gujrat, India, during a railway construction boom. However, his family didn’t stay in East Africa. In 1969, his family then moved to England and again immigrated to Canada in 1969.

After marrying Goleta, he converted to the Baha’i faith. Goleta is a Baha’i woman.
