Rachel Levine’s personal information, such as her life before surgery and as a man, has piqued people’s interest. Here are some important details about her.

On Tuesday, Dr. Rachel Levine, the country’s most senior transgender official, made history by becoming the first openly transgender four-star officer in any of the country’s eight uniformed services.

She will be the head of the USPHS while also serving as the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

In like manner, Levine will oversee the federal government’s approximately 6,000-person army of public health experts who respond to public health disasters, such as delivering COVID vaccinations, and national emergencies.

Before being appointed to the USPHS Commissioned Corps as an admiral, Levine was the secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Dr. Rachel Levine was born Richard Levine in 1957 in Boston, Massachusetts. She attended a private boys’ school outside of the city.

As per the Washington Post interview with Levine, she described her transformation from Richard to Rachel as “long, methodical, and research-driven.”

About 20 years ago, Levine began going to therapy in 2001 and gradually began growing her hair, which is now long and wavy. In 2011, she came out as a transgender woman in public for the first time. She also spent a year and a half taking vocal training to sound more feminine.

After undergoing sex reassignment surgery and hormone therapy, she completed her transition in 2013.

Interestingly, for her contributions to the LGBTQ community, she was also selected to NBC Out’s national #Pride30 list in 2017.
